The iNew V3 is delivered in the package shown above. On this, there is the iNew logo on the front and on the back is a sticker with information about the device. On the right side there is a cloth flap. With this you can bring up the inside of the packaging. When you open it you see nestled in a small cardboard tray the smartphone which is wrapped in foil. Below it comes the instruction manual in English, and a protective film to light.
Below that is a piece of carton under which you can find a battery, a power supply (in our case with German plug), USB cable and headphones. Our dealer has additionally provided us with a bag that contains an android figure, a Micro SD card reader, a mini touch pen, a cleaning cloth and small pins for a bulletin board. Outside of the original carton was a flipcover for the iNew V3. This looks very high quality and has a magnetic closure. If you close the cover the smartphone reacts and switches the view of the lockscreen, so the time and the status are visible through the viewing window of the cover. The cover is easily attached with an adhesive strip on the smartphone.
In terms of design the iNew V3 is kinda amazing for the price range it is located in. Here iNew has really produced a very nice and unique device. On the front dominates the black glass front made of Gorilla Glass, which contains a telephone speaker in black, the front camera, a status LED, the sensors and illuminated soft buttons. The soft buttons for “menu” and “back” are lit in white, the Home button is designed in the form of a slightly curved slit and illuminated in blue, which looks very good.
The back is made of very thin and white plastic, which reminds of the haptic of the Xiaocai X9. Here are located on the upper half of the camera an LED flash and an ambient microphone as well as the iNew logo in shiny metal finish. In the lower half are FCC and CE signs and an NFC logo as well as a speaker hole. The NFC antenna shimmers through the cover.
The left and right side is respectively covered with a metal strip. Here we find the power button on the left and a rocker switch for volume control on the right. The lower side is decorated with fake stereo speakers and two Torx screws. On the upper side of the phone there is the headphone jack and the USB port. In addition, you will find a small hollow to remove the back cover.
Unfortunately, we have also found something negative here. Supposedly the thickness of the device is only 6.5 mm, but this statement made by the manufacturer is wrong. This specification only applies to the edges of the device, however, in the middle of the device, the thickness is about 8.1 mm. If you measure it together with the camera, you end up with about 9mm. Such a misrepresentation we find a bit brash, especially when it is adopted by almost all traders.
Inside the iNew V3 a Mediatek MT6582 Quad Core processor carries out his work. It is clocked at 1.3 GHz per core and has access to 1GB of RAM. In addition, the iNew V3 offers an internal storage of 16GB, which makes using a Micro SD card unnecessary for one or the other.
The benchmark results were like average for this processor. So in Antutu benchmark 17,055 points have been achieved, in the 3D Antutu benchmark rating it had 1,970 points and in 3D Mark 720p test 2,987 points, in 3D Mark 1080p test 2,020 points and 2,910 points in the unlimited test. The system installed on the device is Android 4.2.2 and ran very smoothly during our test. Surfing the Internet works fine and fluid, even with multiple tabs and large pages. Demanding games like Real Racing 3 and Dead Trigger 2 are mastered well by the iNew V3, the latter even with highest graphics settings.
But now we come to a couple of things that really disappointed us, even made us angry while testing the iNew V3. You would believe that the iNew V3 really has NFC support if you see the antenna and all that. But who wants to use NFC will get a nasty surprise: It does not work! In the test, we had the NFC in the settings enabled and then wanted to read an ID card and a bank card, which has been working fine with other NFC devices. But with the iNew V3, nothing happened. This was confirmed to us by various members from a forum, so we assume that it is just a fake – or at least the majority of the units has a hardware defect or software bug.
It continues with the promised OTG support. This is according to the manufacturer not available for the 1st batch of iNew V3. But they do not tell that before the purchase! Owners of one of the devices of the first batch must therefore live without OTG support. This was the case with our review unit as well. Our dealer was so kind to give us a partial refund because of all these issues.
After all the previous negative points, we now come back to something positive: The display! While it is not one of the best, it is still doing very well for this price range. The size of the panel is 5-inch and the resolution is 1280 x 720 pixels, the pixel density is 320dpi. The panel is an IPS OGS panel with Gorilla Glass. It has good brightness with good brightness distribution. Colours are strong but naturally represented. Contours and details are shown sharp, pixels can be seen only from a short distance. The black levels are when viewed from the top of the display very good. The automatic brightness control operates to our satisfaction.
Since it is an IPS panel, the displays content must be clearly visible even from extreme angles. This is definitely the case. It is not the best IPS panel, but still satisfactory for this price range. When looking at the display from all sides, the contents are still sharp and the colors do not invert. However, a decrease in the brightness and the color intensity can be clearly detected.
It is also nice how well the touch screen works. The fingers glide very well on the material and the touchscreen responds very precisely, even with very little pressure. When typing fast you will barely make mistakes – at least if you are experienced with the stock Android keyboard. A small problem was only with the home button. It does not always respond reliably, but you get used to it quickly.
Reception and audio quality
The receiving quality of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G did not impress but also did not disappoint us during the test. The values obtained here were on an average level. The wireless reception was almost without interference, only on the lower floor the signal sometimes broke off when being in rooms that are especially far away from the router. 3G reception was almost never possible in the house, but this is not surprising here at our location and is the case with most phones. Outside, however, 3G works fine. Bluetooth also worked flawlessly with about 8 meters range.
We were surprised by the GPS reception. A fix was there after a few seconds, the unit received 7 satellites and had a fix for 6. That’s not much, but in this case, sufficient for an accuracy of 3 meters. This is entirely sufficient for navigation and position determination. The built-in compass works perfect as well.
In a test call both parties understood each other properly and without interruptions. The sound quality was not very good, but also not too bad. Just average. The internal speaker is loud but lacks bass. He also tends to over-steer at full volume. The headphones of the phone have not been tested as they appear to be standard low quality Chinese headphones.
According iNew a Sony camera is installed in the V3. We can neither confirm nor deny that. But the fact is: The camera makes really good pictures for a modestly priced smartphone! Unfortunately iNew made again a misrepresentation (F2.2 instead of F2.0), but what was something we did not care much about. The camera images are very clear in good lighting conditions and have a surprisingly high depth sharpness. The color reproduction convinced us. An advantage over most other China Phones: Images are not foggy when talking pictures with direct light in front!
Unfortunately, this camera does not perform as well in bad light conditions. This manifests itself first of all in an ever increasing noise and finally at blurred images. The internal LED flash can provide a remedy only for close-ups or small spaces. Video recordings succeed in sufficient brightness very well and (for a smartphone) in acceptable quality.
See some samples below:
The battery life of the iNew V3 convinced us despite the battery only has 1.830mAh of capacity. The unit lasts a day without great difficulties in average use. Only those who play around all the time so should get the battery empty faster. More than a day you can really only get out when it is purely used for calls – but then you probably do not need a smartphone.
Out battery benchmark app reached the following results:
The iNew V3 is a good looking little bluff package, but can still be a great smartphone for those who do not need NFC and OTG, but value the design of a phone, need good GPS reception and a very good camera for a small price. In particular, the design should be one of the most important points when deciding to buy this phone, because with the Xiaocai X9 for example you get an even cheaper Smartphone, which although it does not look quite as pretty and has no high-res screen, has a likewise good GPS and a good camera. Who absolutely needs NFC and OTG and a 6.5 mm thin smartphone should stay away from the iNew V3. The iNew V3 is currently available for an average of 175 U.S. dollars.
